July 1987

This month had a couple pop hits, but the best one was a game called Rygar.  They tried to recreate it on PlayStation 2, but it was nowhere near as fun, challenging, or awesome as the original.  The original even had better music.  The landscapes were beautiful for a Nintendo game at the time, and it sort of felt like a story.  Zelda hadn't been released yet, and this game just blew my mind away in terms of time of play, levels, items.  It had both field exploration and side scrolling, so it was like Zelda I & II rolled into one, without as many popup boxes.  My only complaint was that some of the rooms provided useless information, but some gave clues or an item, so that was ok.  This game is a must-have and must-play.  Still fun today.  Another pop hit was Solomon's Key, which was basically a puzzle game, but too frustrating for my taste, and still feel Rygar was the smash hit of July 1987.
