This felt like the first Final Fantasy, and in my opinion is better than the NES Final Fantasies, but definitely not better than the SNES or further. (So, by true trilogy, better than I, II, and III, but not IV-XIV). I think people were overwhelemed by the item select/menu screen though, as it was a bit much for what NES gamers were accustomed to.
